I know the original bugeye steel wheels that used (I believe) the old
5.20X13 tire
(I believe the equivalent of this tire is today's 145X13) and the wire
wheels were
a little bit wider so 4" sounds reasonable
in terms of what I would call a "little bit"
(courtesy, Bobby De!).

For snow and rain, the more narrow, the
better (talking old LBC's, here). Also,
the expected original "Spritely" handling
and suspension set-up had a lot to do
with this size tire as well.
