With the Dixon show come and gone I finally got around to peeking into the 948
motor in the Austin. Pretty much as expected, there was a reason the coolant
kept disappearing. There's a noticeable crack in the head that drizzled water
into the #2 bore. The crack begins in the flat of the 'island' that divides
the intake and exhaust sides of the combustion chamber and continues into the
chamber, beneath the intake valve seat and ends somewhere in the roof of the
intake chamber. By the rust pitting in the intake valve, I'd guess this
problem had haunted this car for some years.

There is a local shop that has some skill welding head cracks, but if that
doesn't work out I'll be looking for a stock 948 head. The number on the head
is 2A629. This head didn''t use a spring seat, just a machined flat centered
on the valve guide hole. If you have one you'de be willing to sell, let me
know and lets make a deal.
Thanks,
Glen Byrns
