I paid $800 for mine back in 2001, and got rust, but mechanicals that were
mostly sound. Even the thrust washers weren't worn, as I confirmed when I
opened up the engine, though the big end bearings were nearing the end of their
useful life. It was rusty, and I bought a better tub to restore. Two years on
and I'm still working on it.
The one you're looking at sounds like it's in worse shape than mine was, and
even $500 may be too much. On the other hand, parts cars are nice to have
around, especially if you're in the middle of a restoration.
One thing you may want to consider is getting a car from the Southwest. Judging
from prices I've seen on ebay, $2000-$4000 will get you a good runner with
little or no rust. It all depends on if you're looking to drive right away or
for more of a long term project, and how much work you want to put in yourself.
