In the relentless task of sating those enquiring minds and those that need to
know....



Gudgeon  (Building)  The pin fastened to a gate-post or door frame about which
the leaf of a strap hinge turns.

Gudgeon (Engineering)  A pivot at the end of a beam or axle on which a bell,
wheel etc works.

Gudgeon pin (Automotive)  The pin connecting the piston with the bearing of
the little end of the connecting-rod.  Also piston pin.  See floating-.

Floating Gudgeon pin (Engineering)  One free to revolve in both the connection
pin and the piston bosses.

Piston pin (Automotive)  See gudgeon pin-.

Gudgeon

(1) A small European freshwater fish commonly used as bait

(2) Any of various other fishes, such as a Gobi

(3) A person who is easy to trick or cheat

(4) A trick or cheat.

(5) The female portion of a pinned hinge

(6) One or two hooped sockets affixed to the transom of a boat into which the
pintles of a rudder are fixed.



Gudgeon Pin

The pin through the skirt of a piston in an internal combustion engine to
which the little end of the connection rod is attached.  US and Canad. name:
wrist pin.

This is not to be confused with Dudgeon which is a state of anger or
resentment.



The two oldest references are from the gate hinge and rudder mechanism.  This
may also lead onto a Greek or Latin derivation, possibly the Latin 'gubius'.
