Old spridget racer's trick: Weld a piece of 3/16" or 1/4" x 2"-3" plate
(1/4" edge to underside of frame rail) to "frame rail", where down-pipe
exits from engine compartment.  Plate should be about a foot long, and
radiused at front.  To the bottom of the plate, weld a 1/8" or 3/16" "shoe"
to bottom edge of plate.  When you bottom out, the shoe takes the shock and
sliding friction.  The exhaust stays intact.  I use one on my '72 Midget,
for the street.  Feels kind of funny when it bottoms out and puts out a
shower of sparks, at night.  But, it sure protects the exhaust.

The Cap'n is spot on with this preparation list , which SHOULD make you
a competitive car in SCCA Solo FSP class. Tires wise, I run Yoko A008r
185/60s  which are take off tires from Spec Racer Fords, but the hot
auto-x tire is the Hoosier R3S03.
  I can attest to the exhaust thing. I scraped off my exhaust system at
a Solo trials event , braised up a new one for the next auto-x and
scraped it off on the second run. Needless to say I'm on the Safety
steward's .... list. I'm thinking of going to a side pipe If I can
figure out the routing.
