Cyrille...

Here, we have a product called "Gunk
Engine Degreaser" which does a nice
job in the engine compartment.

The stuff is harmless to paint and all
else found within the engine compartment
but I usually remove the dist. cap and wires (clean these separately)
and cover
the distributor with a plastic baggie (this
is usually a good time to lube the distributor as well, BTW).

Don't forget to cover hydraulic reservoirs
as well if they've vented caps!

I also "stuff" the air filter cover openings
as well (stock BE SU set up) and place
a "cap" (plastic cover off a shaving cream
can) over the fuse box.

As Bill B. said, make sure your firewall
is "sealed" (all rubber grommets in place).

This stuff does an excellent job...just use
as directed.

When you are finished cleaning, don't
forget to re-lube the throttle linkage and
such.

Avoid directing a heavy water spray directly at the carbs, battery, fuse
box,
etc. If some of the heavier deposits give
you a difficult time, just repeat the process or use a brush or
(carefully!)
a scraper.
