"Spring-loaded"? Forget about the centering and "center" on replacing
now
and then, 'cause these don't center at
all. They instead wear against one another and I forget which metal is
softer
and which wears first...but in time, they
both wear.

I assume playing with the timing to adjust
idle is a temporary fix? Sure. 

Anyway, you've found part of the problem.
