if you are going for a spectral analasis then not only do you need the trunk
lid, but you had better buff it first! stop laughing! i'm serious! in
order for the color gun to "read" the color you must remove the dirt and
oxidation from the sample finish area. you do not need to polish the
entire panel! it's something along the line of a square foot if memory
serves me right. beware of this though! i'm told that the color match
process will only reccomend a color if that color is in "their" system.
(if for some reason it's an odd or rare color the manufacturer may have
never loaded that aplication's formula, then it will reccomend a "closest
possible match") i'd seriously attempt to try requesting the paint shop
people see if they have a formula for the exact aplication (manufacturer /
year / color code)first. and! get enough for the whole job mixed at one
time by the same person using the same tint batches! use a quart or two of
loosely mixed material for shooting jambs and under hood and trunk first
then use the last gallon as the finish coats for a uniform color match panel
to panel. (good thing i'm just a mechanic!)

chuck.
