Look for a die maker that makes steel rule dies for the cardboard 
cutting industry (large industrial print shops or box manufacturers use 
them) they use a very fine layer plywood that is strong as I've ever 
seen. If you can't find a die company, check with the folks that cut the 
cardboard to make boxes and such, they throw a lot of dies out that you 
could salvage from.
