I use a drill with an assortment of wire wheels and it works pretty good.
As for valve guides, I tried them, at home once and shattered one.
So now I let the machine shop do it. My machinist charges $100 for a 
head job if I supply all the parts. Guides, seals, springs. He cleans 
and assembles and does the vacuum test on it.
