gas tank garbage

I pulled the sender from the fuel tank on the BE tonight and emptied out
miscellaneous stones, unidentifiable pieces of metal the PO had accumulated
in there.

I also removed from the filler side a red plastic piece which is apparently
a float.  I wasn't aware that a float should be in there.  Should it be
there and if so do I need to find a way to reattach it?
