It's actually very hard on train crews when the hit someone.  Even though 
they know there is nothing they can do to stop a train on a dime, they go 
through 
quite a bit of phycological trauma.  One fellow that works with my daughter 
has had to experience 4 separate fatalities.  The last was a fellow walking 
down the center of the tracks.
This engineer retired rather than get back in a train.
