Auction house offers eclectic collection of Montville resident

MEDINA - Before his death a year ago, Merle ``Mickey'' Mishne was a passionate
collector and researcher of autos and transportation.
And the fruits of Mishne's decades of research and collecting will begin to be
auctioned off this month by Wellington-based Antiques and Estate Auctioneers
and Appraisers.
The sale by the Lorain County auction house marks the latest chapter in
Mishne's tragic life.
Mishne, who wrote numerous articles about autos for newspapers and magazines,
became an outspoken critic of violent video games in November 2002 after his
teen-age daughter was killed by another teen who Mishne believed was mimicking
violent acts from the Grand Theft Auto games.
In May, Merle Mishne's body was found in a barn outside the same Montville
Township home where his daughter was murdered.
The 73-year-old's estranged wife, Laurie Mishne, and her boyfriend, Dan Gordon
Johnson, were arrested shortly after the discovery and have been charged with
aggravated murder. Their cases are pending.
In the meantime, Mishne's estate is for sale.
Auctioneer John Farkas said Mishne's estate is so large it will have to be
sold off in four auctions, with the first one set for 11 a.m. Jan. 15.
Farkas said the first lot of 400 items to be sold at his auction house on
state Route 18 in Wellington includes a 1946 La France firetruck that Merle
Mishne bought from the city of Fairview Park almost 25 years ago. It has 9,000
miles on it.
Farkas said the items to be sold -- the proceeds will be distributed among
Mishne's heirs -- also include car posters worth about $25 and original
artwork valued at several thousand dollars.
``Mickey liked art before he liked food,'' he said.
Mishne's eclectic collection also includes collectible Bugatti pieces that
have attracted interest from collectors as far away as Chile and England,
Farkas said.
``It is a wonderful collection,'' he said. ``We are very excited about
this.''
