As long as the flanges on both timing cover and oil pan are ABSOLUTELY flat 
(and "clean") and bolts are not overtorqued (which will tend
to bend those flanges which may then cause leakage), there should be no 
difference. If the flanges are not absolutely
(cleanly) flat, you MAY have better luck with the rubber rather than cork 
gasket(s).

I can remember a timing cover leak that
drove me nuts using the cork gaskets. Finally went to rubber (after checking for
flange "flatness"....it was flat) and the
problem went away.

You're sure this is a seal problem and not
a symptom of too much crankcase pressure?
