Mark,
NO you CANNOT get ported vacuum on a carb that does not have it built in for 
that express purpose!!! You are better off not connecting anything to the 
distributor at that point. The Y connector is NOT ported vacuum. If the 
carbs have ported vacuum, it will be a small barbed pipe on the front carb 
pointing horizontally towards the front of the car near the throttle plate. 
As you noticed, no other vacuum sourcce will work correctly with that 
distributor's vacuum module.
Vacuum advance enhances part-throttle operation (marginally) and improves 
MPG when cruising. You can live happily ever after without it. Your stumble 
might be caused by too thin of oil in the dashpots; engine oil is the usual 
recommendation.
