Water is heavier than oil. Salt dissolves in water. Sand doesn't dissolve in water. Water boils at 100*C, salt doesn't. These are all physical properties of the parts of the mixture. As far as properties of physics that explain the cause, I guess: Lighter liquids will float on top of heavier liquids Solids dissolved in water can pass through a filter Solids dissolved in water will be left behind if the water is boiled off.  |
