Yes, it is important that the driveshaft not be out of balance.
When changing the u-joints, you should be sure to get the two yokes of it
back into the same relationship they started at to preserve the balance. If
you do have it balanced, it is balanced to itself and it still does not
matter which way you bolt it to the diff as long as you can get all four
bolts through the flanges. Don't know of any company that balances a
driveshaft to a diff.
Some old American iron cared about the driveshaft to diff alignment because
you could assemble it with the u-joints out of phase to each other. Both
u-joints of a Spridget are attached to the same non-disassembleable tube, so
it is not possible to get them out of phase by replacing u-joints unless you
were to saw it apart and weld it back together. No, I have no idea why
someone would want to do that.
