We had a great tire shop in town that had been here for years and years
that was the only place around that could mount and balance wire wheels.
I just happened to go by it this morning and it looks like they've
closed up shop. A google search turned up this entry in someone's blog:

Development is creeping from downtown to Foster Street. Across the
street from the Scrap Exchange, a vacant building was demolished and
hauled away. Across the street from that, Nu-Tread Tire was closed,
and sits vacantto be demolished, too?

A photo of the place can be seen here:

It's a shame, that was a great place to get tires.

Almost everything around here is part of a huge chain anymore. When I go
into the auto parts store they barely speak English. A couple of weeks
ago I ordered a distributor cap for the Midget from Advance Auto in
town. Went back to pick it up the next day when they said it would be
there and they had no record of the order and no part. I even asked the
person at the register if I had given her the slip for the special order
because my short term memory is pretty lousy and she said yes. Then I
asked her who do I see when I come back to pick it up and she showed me.
Then she forgot to enter the order into the system. So much for the time
I had set aside to work on the ignition problem that day.

This has become a typical interaction at my local auto parts store:

Me: Hi, I need [whatever part] for a 1970 MG Midget.

Counter Zombie: Manufacturer?

Me: MG

Them: Who makes it?

Me: MG, just type an M and a G into the computer.

Them: [MG shows up on the screen] Oh, MG what's that? I never heard of
that before..........

It happens every time without fail. Unfortunately there are no more
independent places to go around here anymore if you need it the same day.

Urgh,

Robert
