I've usually had good success using a deep socket, the U-joint and a good 
vice.
As long as the cup that doesn't have the socket is on the clear.
The cup usually comes out quite a bit and then I use a BIG vice-grips to 
wiggle it out.
Then there's usually enough room to get the cros piece out...
