A couple of tricks I have used in the past....
2 pieces of angle iron welded inside the existing box to form an inside box.

The box frame is really a 2" "U" with a 3" bottom plate. I have had the 
local sheetmetal shop bend up the U channel, the bottom flat is easy.

I have reinforced areas like under the sway bar mounts, made better jack 
hole points, installed 1/2" steel inside the cross member, and things 
like that where they tend to bend or rust out.
