Sorry, but the *illegal* immigrants of today cannot be compared to the
*legal* immigrants of a century or two centuries ago, who wanted to learn
the language and become *Americans*, forsaking their birth countries.
(Anyone remember "Life With Luigi"?) America's need for immigrants was
simply far different than it is today. In the last 50 years, it has proven
far easier for an uneducated and unskilled illegal to get into the country
and later to become "legalized", than it is for a highly educated and
skilled European, some of whom wait patiently for years to obtain a work
visa and Green Card, but in the end are denied legal entry. Further, it
must be kept in mind that up to a third of those who sought entry a century
ago were denied entry for physical or mental health reasons, and returned
to their native country.

(Sorry, but the historian in me sometimes cannot be contained.)
