Larry:
How about the executive summary of what you found out/decided?

====================================

Well, here are the answers that I received that weren't duplicates:

Yes, Larry. Go to www.spybot.info

----------------------

Google Lavasoft and download their free product.

----------------------

i use AVAST anti-virus.. also free, but slightly higher rated
than AVG. . for a firewall, i use filseclab firewall. again
free...and has anti-trojan protection built in.

spyware protection.. semi-regular scans with lava-soft
ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, and spyware blaster. ..

haven't had a problem since i've been using this combination...
       a couple of years..

---------------------

The spybot answer came first from a computer pro on the list, so I tried
that. I downloaded it and ran it twice and both times my computer
completely shut down before the scan was finished. Uh, oh. This doesn't
look good.

I already use AVG's free anti-virus and found that they have a spyware
program, too. I tried it and was successful. I then went back and tried
the spybot again and this time got a complete scan in with no problems. In
fact, it found one tracker that the AVG didn't catch.

Several people suggested the AVAST program as being better than AVG. I will
probably try that, too, but haven't, yet.

One person suggested shutting down the AVG Control Center and manually
checking for updates to speed the machine up a bit. I did, but I'm not
sure, yet, if it helped or not.

My problem is that I don't know (or care) much about this stuff. For me,
computers are an evil necessity for my work. I want the darn thing to turn
on every day and just keep on humming along like a Honda or Toyota. No
soul, just do the damn job and then leave me alone.

Now, for you 'puter pros, are there issues with compatibility when running
multiple spyware programs? Is it necessary? Is it wise? Would I be right
in assuming that the more programs one has scanning, the longer it takes to
do anything?

The only thing I know for sure is that the Spyware Doctor program that I
paid for slowed my computer down to the point that I wanted to throw it
through the window. It is too damn cold to be busting out windows in WI in
January.
