I'm in the process of replacing the A Post on Bugsy my '68. I cut out the
what isn't a captive nut but a solid plate behind there. You'll find as I did
that the whole damn thing is rusted to the thinner sheetmetal. It did however
come loose quite easily when I was able to get a screwdriver underneath it.
Distance between the lower edge of the screwhole to the bottom of the plate is
1/4", The sheetmetal around those plates is pretty much destroyed by my removal
process but I can send pics of the plate if that would help. That whole plate
is free floating contained within the steel box. Pressue from three screws
pulls the plate against the A-Post and secures the door. No great engineering
marvels and surprises once I pulled it apart. Gives you axis to move L, R, Up,
Down over a very small area for final alignment. Start soaking with PB Blaster
and banging away gently to get the plate moving once again.
Other thought would be to put in a soft bolt, cut off with Dremel cut off
wheel, drill and retap. Might be tough to get access but that is a thought as
well. I was going to do a 1/2 A - Post replacement but after I got into it I
figured the door alignment and hinges it was simpler to replace the entire
A-Post. Finishing up final fitting and welding will be done this weekend.
