Very well put. The newer points (China?) sometimes are missing the
insulating washers. You have to look at it real close.  ...bill in oregon

Joe,
My guess is that the contact breaker points are wrongly assembled so that
the washers that insulate the spring from the post are missing or in the
wrong position. This will short out the points and give the symptoms that
you describe.
