yes! i have the 1955 chevrolet service bulliten that states this. bon ami
was to seat rings (also GM's factory rec. windshiend scratch remover! i posess
a factory container !) in the early 265 V8. the motor was also plagued with
bad lifters wich frequently colapsed. none of the chrvrolet line had oil
filters up to 1955. the 216 and later 235 6cyl's were offered an ooptional
canister oil filter wich clamped onto the forward portion of the intake
manifold using the AC P115 filter. i have a 265 V8 AC oil filter assembly as
well as one AC 235 6cyl one as well as one purolater assembly. if memory
served me right the wix assembly used the toilet paper roll.
as for pressure oiling it was standard on the 216's and was well developed by
the introduction of the 265 motor. the 265 was chevrolet's first try with a
V8 design after the illfated end of the V8 production in 1917. chevrolet's
stove bolt 6's were the standard of their power along with 4 cyls..
by 1956 the 265 V8 was well sorted.
now onto other interesting "fixes" of the era? how about putting rice
(uncooked, dry white rice) or pouring about 1 cup of water down the carb with
motor running (at varied rpm's) to decarbon an engine? both work with varied
sucess!
another fun fact about the era's air filters: in the 55 chevies line the
desert air filter for the 6cyl was an oil bath type but the rest of production
got a wire mesh filter wich was to be washed and oiled so the oil would catch
the passing dirt particles , yet the V8 recieved an oil bath filter for both
the 2BL (standard motor with single exhaust) and the 4BBL (optional "power
pack" with dual exhaust)versions.
did i mention i own 2 '55 chevies and owned a '56 as well (that one's gone).

chuck.
"been there ..broke that...fixed it & broke it again....."
after 35 years..still own the same darn bugeye.....
