To add to the conversation - I have had every brand mentioned (and a
couple not - Quantum ring a bell?) fail over the years.
The bottom line is if your data is important keep it on a variety of
media, different locations, and multiple drives.
I like mirrored raid and DVD/RW myself...If using cheaper external
drives consider not leaving them connected and spinning all the time.
FWIW: this morning I saw online a Buffalo NAS 1TB (500GB mirrored) for
~$210.00. I thought about getting one, but I am busy converting my
eeePC to a mini-tabletPC and just spent my computer allowance for the
month on a touch screen. ;^)
