This was 1967 and I was young. If a little time in carb cleaner is good, a
long time is better. A few hours in my situation would have done. I left the
case half in there overnight. 

Yes, I sense you could use a plastic container with the Evapo-rust product.

Why wouldn't I use a plastic container? Also what do you mean by "Don't
leave the block in there
too long as carb cleaner" is this carburetor cleaner? And how long is too
long?

Herb how long did you leave items with rubber parts in?
