Re: rear brake shoe installation

Hi all,

Rear brake springs on later backing
plates are fairly easy to replace this
way. I only use a pair of needle nose
pliers and a medium sized flat bladed screwdriver for this task. I have not
replaced shoes on the back of a Spridget with the early type of
wheel
cylinders for a while, but I seem to remember that a similar
technique works
for them too.

Make sure the handbrake is in the off position, and the
adjusters
are adjusted inwards before you begin. This technique can be used
with
the hub and half shaft still in place, but is even easier if these are
not on the car.

Hook the top of new shoes into handbrake lever assembly and
wheel
cylinder slots, but do not mount the bottom of the shoes yet. (They are
angled out towards you.) There is plenty of room & almost no
tension when you
put the top spring in, & hook it into the correct
spot this way. The only
tricky bit is getting the end of this spring
over the handbrake lever
properly. This may involve the use of
appropriate vocabulary for many
Spridget owners.

Now hook bottom spring into locating holes on shoes (The
bottom of the
shoes are still not mounted.) There is only a little amount of
tension
involved so far. Now with a bit of force with a screwdriver, the
bottom
of each shoe can be popped into place quite easily. Fitting the last
end is the only part of the task where knuckles are vulnerable if you slip.
Centralise the shoes, fit the drum and then adjust them properly.
Don't over
- tighten them, or you will be repeating the process soon
with another new set
of shoes. I can tell you this from recent experience.
