Digital SLR is the way to go Frank, I have friends who all have Nikons and
you can get a D40 with a lens for pretty cheap right now.
This would be more than enough camera for any amateur photographer, what a
lot of people don't know is that if you have a drawer full of lenses for an
old 35mm film camera then you should look into getting a digital camera body
that uses those lenses. They bolt right on, and if they were auto focus then
they will still be auto focus on the new camera. If they were manual then
they will continue to be manual of course, but sometimes those old lenses
had much better glass than what you can reasonably buy today. Also your
telephoto lens gets longer with digital, if your lens is 300mm for a film
camera then it's equiv to a 450mm on a digital. Unless you have the bucks to
get a full frame digital (I think they start at about $5K for the body).

I got the Pentax K10D which I chose because I had a drawer full of Pentax
lenses and because it was the only one in my price range that was reasonably
water resistant. In fact there are stories of people dropping these cameras
in the water, fishing them out and taking more pictures.
Since I wanted a camera I could take with me when I go fishing in Alaska
that was important to me.

If you go for a model that's a couple years old you can get a pretty good
deal both brand new and lightly used.
I got mine on Ebay for about half the price of a brand new one. Pentax was
just releasing the K20D and the guy wanted to upgrade from 10 to 14 Mpixels.
10 MP is plenty for me and paying half price is right up my alley!

Add a macro auto-focus lens and you'll be taking some really great shots of
the smallest pieces of these cars you can imagine!
