Those of you who were at the BusterCluster will remember Al Clemens, the
professional photographer who with his wife Carol bought their Sprite in
Memphis at the same time I did. Since Al, Carol and Donna Mae were racing
friends in the 1960s, I sent him the news of her passing. You might be
interested in one of his reminiscences
"I hate that. I thought the world of Donna Mae, although after she
"graduated" from H Production, she never did too well. One of the last
races Carol ran while we lived in Memphis was a national race in St. Louis.
I couldn't go, so Phillip (Herold at Small Car Motors) showed Carol how to
install the roll bar. He de-tuned the Sprite and gave her specific
instructions on re-tuning it and de-tuning it again. She drove to St. Louis
alone, set the Sprite up and raced. She and Donna Mae (in her pink Sprite)
were the only women there. Donna Mae was intrigued by the little girl who
came alone and they became friends, even though Carol came in dead last (but
second in womens' class). Carol, with help from Donna Mae's pit crew,
de-tuned the Sprite and drove it home, tired and sleepy, but very happy."
