Skip,
It won't know.  HOWEVER, you will have a potential for shorting the battery
voltage to ground.  Most modern accessories such as GPS devices iPods, etc
are well insulated, but the potential does exist that something might get
plugged in that has a metal part that is nominally grounded, if that should
touch any metal part of the car.... Do you enjoy fireworks?  Of course,
fuses will keep the danger down, but if you keep blowing them they're no fun
either.
