Tim,
Back in the days before dirt, calculators, minicomputers and such a serious
U.S. ralley team would have two electric odometers, two or three stop watches
and a trusty slide rule.
The reason for the multiple watches is that one has the time you took on the
last section (along with one of the odometers), one is ticking off the time on
the current section(along with one of the odometers) and if you had fixed
delays then the third watch comes in to play. For instance "Allow 5 minutes to
cross the train tracks." When you reached the train tracks you would stop the
current time watch while at the same time start the delay watch. Once across
the tracks you would wait for the delay time to lapse and restart the current
time watch as you proceeded on the route. The "correct avg speed" did not
account for the delay time but the overall time did.
