Dave,
I've never bump steered a stock Spridget to quantify it but my 74 has too much
bumpsteer. It is slightly lowered so that's one reason for it, the more you
lower the car the worse the bumpsteer gets. The race Sprite was lowered approx
3" and it needed the rack moved up 3/8" along with other minor changes. You
can't have good bump steer through the complete range of suspension travel, so
you compromise to make it the best in bump, and that takes care of braking and
the loaded wheel in cornering. I lowered my 74 Midget in the front also. I
didn't set out to lower it intentionally, but because the rear suspension was
lower. Found out later there is a broken leaf on the LR, and I will be soon
replacing the springs, bushings, shocks, building a panhard bar, finding and
repairing a hole or crack in the rear axle housing, and removing the wire
wheels. You might want to check your rear springs also, especially if the ride
height is not the same on the LR and RR.

Hey you have to have time to do your planning also, so don't worry about your
down time. I just remind myself this is just a hobby, for years is was more
like a job. I enjoy it more now when I'm in the shop. Just follow the doctor's
orders and be healthy and ready for the better weather. I am now two weeks
into a hiatus from my garage and it's likely to be a couple more weeks. We are
acclimating and training an 8 month old golden retriever we adopted, and my
limited patience is getting a workout

Hi John,

>> You didn't mention if the Alfa was a race or street car?
It was an Alfa Sprint set up for Solo II.
IIRC, the Alfa workshop manual recommended pre-loading to compensate for
the change in toe-in caused by the weight transfer under heavy braking
(something like the infamous early VW Beetle bump-steer effect). The dealer
used some sort of tie down chain!!

Thinking a bit more about my query, I suppose I should have asked "Does the
Spridget 'bump-steer'"?

I've just had some minor repair work done on my Heart taking medication and
putting up with some activity restrictions set by the Doctor ;-((
So, instead of working on the car, I'm thinking of my to-do list and
considering "what if I tried x or y or z"!

I remembered some-one on the list mentioning that the trunnion bolts should be
tightened with the wheels supporting the car instead of being on the jacks
with the wheels hanging down. This got me thinking about my '76 Midget which
is riding too high at the front, which got me thinking about toe-in, which led
to... yada, yada, yada,

You can guess the rest of the sequence ;^D
