If the plate on the top of the block is missing, 948's and 1098's have
tappet covers. 1275's don't have any tappet covers because their bores are
too fat. 
If the plate is still there, it's above the generator or alternator on the
top edge of the block. The number will start with either a 9, 10, or 12.
