They have what is called a scroll seal. There is a spiral, cut into the rear
of the crank, that, whilst the engine is running, "allegedly" twists the oil
back into the pan. BUT, with many folks incorrectly "de-smogging" their
vehicles, the crankcase builds up more pressure than the poor old scroll can
handle. Sure, remove the smog pump, but don't just plug up the hose, put a
filter on it, and let it breath. If air was moving through it for the
emissions, it STILL needs to move through it, to keep crankcase pressures
from building.
That said, any seller will not tell you to get your block correctly vented,
they will tell you to buy their product, because you NEED IT!
NOW!!
Before the EPA is knocking on your door, threatening you with the Exxon
Valdez sized oil clean up fine, for a puddle under your car.
Our little town was trying to pass an ordinance, to write you a ticket, if
you didn't park your car on concrete. If you were on grass, and IF your car
leaked anything, it "might" get into the groundwater.
Just another way for the POLITICIAN to get their filthy little money
grubbing hands into someones wallet.
