         I went though 40 or so just now, and ALL of them have the 
relief as pictured.
         Casting numbers as follows:  LH caliper indirect half (outer 
w/o hose connection) 3243-220 Direct 3243-222
                         RH indirect 3243-331   direct 3243-223

         I've never seen a caliper without it. If you go to an old 
BMC parts catalog, there was a supercession at the beginning of disc 
brake applications. Perhaps that was the difference. It would 
probably be harder to find those early ones than not.
