I replaced the stock 3/8 " studs on my '67 vintage race car with 
7/16" studs from Pep Boys just to gain the extra strength and length. 
I removed the four hubs and drilled the holes in the hubs to the 
correct diameter to accommodate the serrations on the studs and 
pressed them in. I also opened up the holes in the drums and axles on 
the rear. I drew them tight by bolting them to a wheel which also 
insured all four were parallel to each other.

After quite a few on-off cycles of race tires, rain tires, garage 
tires, and other maintenance, one stud spun and I had to use a 
ziz-wheel to cut through the nut and stud. The permanent fix involved 
bolting the hubs to a wheel to insure parallelness and putting a spot 
of weld on the backside where the head of the larger stud sits 
against the back surface of the hub. I did this on all 16 studs just 
to make sure. Never a problem since.

I wrote an article for the defunct Sprite/Midget Magazine with all 
the details, including part numbers, sizes, photos, etc. that I can 
send you off list if you want.
