Why are we debating about whether these problems "should" exist. Unless
you are involved in the design of the vehicle, you need to accept that
they are real problems in the field and what you can do to mitigate their
effects. Instead of asking "Why should I keep at least a 1/4 tank of
fuel?" just do it and know that you are lengthening the life of your
pump. Don't bitch to the list that the engineers screwed up. They know
it! Newer Impalas have a "fuel module access plate" in the trunk floor,
so you don't need to drop the tank. Do you think this modification was
made for any reason other than a high failure rate (under warranty) of
the pumps? GM made the change because it was costing them warranty
dollars. If they thought that most pumps would outlast the warranty
would they have done it? I doubt it. If you are driving any make of
vehicle with an in tank pump (not just GM) it takes little effort to keep
fuel in the tank and to change any external fuel filter at the
recommended interval. If out of pure "cussedness" you refuse to, I'll be
glad to sell you a $250.00 (or more) fuel pump module. And "Oh Yeah" -
you're welcome for the information.
