$1000 is a good deal.
I shoot single stage and I can get it to shine better than most
base/clears. I did all my dads cars and my VW's single stage. I use dupont
and it comes out great.

Base coat/clear coat is just about all you can get done nowadays. It
takes skill to draw a good shine from a single stage paint.
My buddy painted my Miata hardtop with a single stage enamel. It
turned out good and the quart of paint and two additives were only
around $80.
Incidentally, my buddy sold his 66 Sprite last year for $6500.

Also, getting a good shop to touch a classic car is tough. You will
pay extra for someone who will do a good job on a classic car. The
money to be made by body shops nowadays is in painting parts of cars
and blending. They don't like to paint entire cars.

$1000 is probably a bargain if you get a decent finish out of the
deal. Figure at least 1/4 of that for materials.
