Wow, you ask questions like I do! ;-)
Use metal fuel line where you can, it won't break down. Copper may be ok but
steel line is cheaper and works fine, any good parts place will have it in
straight pieces, although you may have to put two together to get the full
length. alternately, purchase some CuNi or steel brake line of the right
diameter and use it.
In general, fuel pumps push better than pull so you want the fuel pump close
to the fuel tank. Somewhere around where the rear axle is seems to work
fine.
Also in general, you do NOT need a high pressure pump. Facet makes excellent
pumps. They are small, rectangular and there are generic similar ones at any
FLAPS. There are better ones, vane type I think, that are quieter, and
cylindrical in shape, also at a FLAPS.
Don't fret, this is a common thing.
