EdwardI have never heard of 'universal flares'. =C2=A0Pipe end flares are e=
ither either a dome shape (male or single flare) or a funnel shape (female =
or double flare). To place it in the context most will understand it requir=
es opposite sexes to seat correctly. =C2=A0Next are the nuts that hold them=
together, if you have the correct threads for these they SHOULD be OK. =C2=
=A0(There are 4 or 5 threads in circulation with the main split in more mod=
ern vehicles being Metric or UNF) =C2=A0They should turn fairly resistance =
free by hand upto the last tightening spanner turn. =C2=A0If a male nut on =
the pipe you MAY find this nut is not long enough as there is a small unthr=
eaded portion at the start of the male nuts and this can be in different le=
ngths. =C2=A0If you tighten the nut up by hand this should stop any back an=
d forth movement of the pipe, if there is movement, the unthreaded bit of t=
he nut is not long enough. =C2=A0The inner part of this nut contains a tape=
r to seat and push on the pipe end to help make the joint. =C2=A0The nut do=
es not provide the seal, this comes from the pipe flare the nut pushes.=C2=
=A0There are other minor differences (but ones you should be aware of) in t=
he angle of the flare dependant on the former =C2=A0that made the flare and=
it COULD be you are experiencing a mis-match problem but Kunifer (copper-n=
ickel) pipes are normally soft enough to overcome this and will deform and =
seal. =C2=A0This very rare.=C2=A0Other problems could well be dirt in the f=
itting or deformed (crossed) threads cocking the nut over slightly. =C2=A0W=
hatever else you try, DO NOT use teflon or other sealing tape, =C2=A0'O' ri=
ngs or any other kind of washer. =C2=A0It may be you have to cut the flare =
off, then source a different nut or have a different flare at the pipe end.=
=C2=A0If they don't seal when dry there is usually something you can see v=
isibly wrong.Ring the pipe supplier to ask for help to see if he has any th=
oughts, but please don't ring him saying he has supplied the wrong end - he=
may well have - but the difference between asking for help and laying imme=
diate blame can sometimes be the difference between having a new set f.o.c.=
or having to return the old pipe etc....
Best of luck
