Chad: I went this route with my Tiger. My motivation was to remove every
last spec of rust and have a iron oxide free Tiger. You have to strip
everything off the car, and those aluminum ID tags have to come off, or
they'll disolve! Also, it was recomended that I remove as much of the
undercoat and bodyfiller as possible. Since time in the dip tank equals
more money out of your pocket, the car will be derusted in about 1/3 the
time if the undercoat doesn't have to be soaked off first. It was a
truly amazing sight when I picked the car up! Clean metal, shiny like an
Delorean, and swiss cheese area's where the rust had dissolved.
After doing the cut and weld dance with the fresh sheet metal, I used
Ditzler epoxy primer on, over, and inside everything. This is the same
stuff used on modern cars, and light years ahead of anythng that Rootes
could have gotten their hands on back then.
Not for the faint hearted or for some one in a hurry to get their car
back on the road! But this process will insure that you're resto won't
start rusting again for a long time. At least long enough for those
Quinton-Hazel ball joints and repro suspension pieces to explode on you!
