     A friend loaned me a tube of windshield sealer that might do the 
     trick, if your top is black.  This is the pro grade stuff used by auto 
     glass shops.  It's sort of like RTV, but it dries (cures?) into this 
     really tough rubber that sticks to stuff extremely well.  I used it to 
     patch some disintegrating door and window gaskets in my '78 Mercury.  
     I don't remember the name of it, but try a local glass shop.
     
     You could use this stuff to glue a patch onto the inside, that holds 
     the edges of the tear together.
