When a top loader begins to shift hard the first thing to do is change
the fluid and see if that helps. Next take the chrome ring off and
move the rubber boot up, then remove the small panel under the shifter
and visually check for any worn parts or interference with first gear
shift. There is an alignment hole in the shift levers, put it in
neutral and the holes should line up, if not put a pin through the
hole and adjust the the shift rods. See Shop Manuel for more details.
If none of this helps, you will probably need a rebuild. If there is
a local rebuilder in your area talk to them first to see if you have
overlooked anything. Another contact is Dan Williams Top loader
Transmissions in Florida, I think that is correct(?). He is a great
source of information and parts, he even lists Tiger transmissions in
 his catalog.
If you know whats wrong with the transmission, you can rebuild it your
self, just follow the Shop Manual. I rebuilt my transmission several
years ago, new input bearing , new output bearing, new bushing in the
tail shaft, new rear seal, new input shaft seal, and I also recomment
a new set of gaskets. It was not hard to do and it only took a
couple of weekends to finish the job. Good luck with your top
loader, and I hope this was of help.
