Hi Steve,

I've worked on many cars with "left handed" threaded lugs on the left
side (my 1973 Ford Courier is still that way today [6 lugs too!] as well
as my Lotus having the left locking, hex head, center locks that you
describe).

On occassion, we would find that someone had mistakingly (or carelessly)
installed a hub intended for the left side (with the left locking
hardware) on the right side of a vehicle - USUALLY on the front only.

This is the picture that I visualized by the description that Stu
provided about his right front wheel.

Please note that left threaded lug nuts are available for custom wheels
but a difficult to find.

BTW - I have noticed that I have only seen this technique used on
British and some Japanese vehicles - concur?

On a separate note - do any of the fellow "Listers" know of a good
Volkswagen WebSite? I have an all original 1968 Type 3 Squareback Wagon
that I think I am going to sell. It was purchased new at Allred
Brothers in Glendale, California. It's not worth very much money and
needs some items but it is in very good physical condition (no rust or
damage). It is an "automatic" too.

Best wishes,

Don Cordier
