Hi Stu
 I had a similar problem when I did my car.I removed the JAL tag and tried
different items to scrape the paint off the Rootes ID plate.What finally
worked best was a thumbnail.I didnt scrape it all off at the same time. I also
didnt prep or wipe any thinner or remover onto the plate before scrapping
it.The black areas stayed intact with very little scratching .My car was
painted with lacquer.I then left the plate on the car and taped over it.
