Hopefully, into your filter. The good (?) thing about using iron or steel gears
is that those pieces can also be caught by a magnetic drain plug. Having a big
silvery booger on your drain plug every time you change the oil is
disconcerting, but it does help keep pieces out of your oil pump. I haven't
actually tried this on an engine but the transmission and diff on my road racing
Toyota had magnetic drain plugs, and they collected mostly really fine mush but
occasionally gear chips. These chips in themselves were no big deal, so long as
they didn't keep going through the transmission, and the drain plug seemed to be
effective at collecting them.
