A few years ago I was at Techcraft Machine in Redwood City (CA), the
shop that was doing the machine work for my engine rebuild. While I was
there one of the shops owners was talking to another customer about some
funny looking serpentine etching around the water passage opening of his
351 heads. The shop owner asked the guy if he used Water Wetter, to
which he replied yes. The shop owner went on to say that he had seen
these marks before on other heads he'd worked on and that they were
caused by using Water Wetter. He also claimed that a major radiator
manufacturer he regularly dealt with had done extensive testing of the
coolant additives currently on the market, including Water Wetter, and
found that none of them had any effect on heat transfer rate or in
reducing engine temperature. Since I had been a long time user of
straight water and Water Wetter in my Cobra, I asked what he recommend
in place for the Water Wetter. He said any of the additive that
provided water pump lubrication and inhibited corrosion would do.
