If you are starting a hydraulic roller motor then it is not really necessary
to "break in" the cam as it is not required. However, it is necessary to
vary engine rpm through a succession of slow accelerations from 1200 rpm to
2200 rpm to avoid glazing rings. The biggest problem with a new engine is
ring seat and the best thing is to avoid any constant rpm or idling for the
first 500 miles. While I am not advocating that you go out and beat on it I
do suggest that you go out and "use" the engine under load to facilitate
ring break in. Try not to let it idle excessively (more than 10 min at a
time) without varying engine rpm. Lots of long up hill grades would be the
best way to achieve a quick ring seal.
