Alex and Tigers,

I have been pondering Alex's recent reporting on air filter losses of 19
horsepower, without his 9" K&N, and have directly contacted K&N.

Some interesting facts, some of which were new to me, have been
acquired. I was sure the Tiger group would want to hear about it.

First, the K&N 9" filter Alex was using is NOT the model K&N recommends
for the Tiger. K&N recommends their E-2859, which Sunbeam Specialties
carries at a reasonable price, which is a 13 1/2 inch O.D., 11 3/4 inch
O.D., and 1 1/2 inch high. It is rated at only 318 CFM!!!! And this is
higher than stock a paper element.

Second, in removing the air cleaner the jetting changes to richer by
approximately 2 jet sizes (never exact), so again I wonder whether Alex
changed jets to optimize mixture for those dyno runs.

Be that as it may, the Tech Support at K&N was not surprised at a 20 hp
increase.

I have not received Alex's response (nor did I expect to so quickly) on
what mesh top he is considering that wouldn't just let raw air in.

K&N has a solution, other than their complete carburetor cover, smooth
tube, air intake and filter housing.

FILTER TOP

It is called their "Extreme Top", and retails for about $85. They sent
me a fairly detailed photograph, which cannot be put on the list mail,
but I'll describe the set-up to you.

The Extreme is 14 inch Diameter radially pleated filer mesh and element,
like their air cleaner, with a center rubber mounting plate and a rubber
flanged edge for mating to their 14 inch ROUND filter. Can't squeeze
this oval, but someone enterprising might be able to carve it up to
fit. It has a conical "coolie hat" shape with a mild depression. The
drops available are 7/8 inch and 1 1/4 inch There is an internal stop
nut to sandwich the top between the top nut, and squeeze the filter to
the base. (More on the base)

FILTER

Their 14 inch filters are a MINIMUM of 2 5/16 inch thick. They go up
from there.

DROPPED FILTER BASES (LARRY PAY ATTENTION)

They make bases for the carbs that drop the air cleaner level by being
conically depressed from the center to the edge, dropping the top of the
air cleaner closer to the carb. This, of course, covers more of the
carburetor. The smallest 14 inch diameter drop is 2 5/16 inch, and
electric or hot air chokes must be removed. Manual chokes fit.

Well, that's the "tale of the tape", so you can get your yo-yo out and
see what might be made to fit. For a quick 20 horsepower it sounds like
a bargain.

We still have a question on Alex's dyno tests regarding jet changes, and
what the result might have been had he used the original Tiger air
cleaner bases and the 13 1/2 inch diameter x 1 1/2 inch height filter,
vs a 9 inch of unspecified height.

Hope this is of interest.

Steve
